To begin with, you don’t have to choose one over the other. Rather, look for the harmony between your personal and professional life knowing that it will vary over time, often on a daily basis. The right balance for you today will probably be different for you tomorrow. Keeping that in mind, you can use the following five tips to achieve Work life harmony:
Life is never static, it’s constantly changing and evolving. While it is great to be perfect, you need to be realistic. Learn to let go. Trying to do and be everything for everyone often leads to failure. Cut out the things that are stressing you out and are not so important. It will give you time to focus on the other important stuff.
Focus on your strengths and learn to outsource the things you are not good at to others. If you’re not at technology, hire someone or ask for help from friends or family. If you’re not good at accounts or graphic design, outsource them instead of wasting time.
3. Focus on your health
Make exercise a ritual. It’s very easy to say that I don’t have the time or I’m exhausted or I have project deadline or a big meeting I have to prepare for so I can’t exercise.Instead, give exercise priority as much as you give your work and your clients. A healthy body means a fresh mind, which means you will function better and complete tasks in less time.
You may love making to-do lists but you need to further prioritise those lists and break them down into what is important versus what is not. Understand yourself and the way you function. When do you work best, is it morning or evening? Dig deeper into yourself to make sure you are prioritising things that are important to you.
It is extremely necessary to spend quality time with yourself and for yourself. Most importantly, without “GUILT”. Especially when you run your own business or are an entrepreneur you strive to give every waking minute to your work but and you want to succeed so there should be no harm in that. Unfortunately, you run the risk of burn out which is something you don’t want to have. Set work hours for yourself and do everything in your power to stick to them. Otherwise, before you know it, you’ll be working until midnight every night.
This goes back to prioritising the important stuff in your life and in doing so if you have to say no to someone, it’s really ok. Maybe you’re in the midst of a deadline and your pal from the other department comes and asks you for a favour. What will you do? When you stop doing things out of necessity, you’ll find more time to focus on the activities that truly bring you joy. Fight that urge to explaining why you cannot do something with someone.
Every piece of technology has an off button. Use it! Start with baby steps, it wont be easy but give it a shot. Try with simple things like no phones on the dinner table. No laptop during your evening at the park. You will slowly start to realise how liberating it feels to not be connected 24/7. Allow yourself that freedom. Not only will you benefit from it, so will your friends and family. You will get more quality time together.
Take breaks during your work-day. It’s ok to eat your lunch at the desk sometimes but dont make it a habit. Take a lunch break. Remember to take time out throughout your day. You might not have time every day to simply sit and “be”, but do your best to give yourself a break. It will help you be more productive and focused.
